Petersburg and Menard County IL Schools

Menard County Illinois is served by three public school districts, PORTA, Athens, and Greenview. In addition, the area is directly served by Salt Creek Academy (Safe School Program) as well as Lincoln Land Community College. Several other Higher Education institutions are located within commuting distance, including UIS (University of Illinois at Springfield,) and Robert Morris College (now University) also in Springfield, IL.

PORTA Community District 202 is comprised of a District Office in Petersburg supporting two Elementary Schools (Petersburg & Tallula,) one Middle School (in Petersburg,) one junior High School (in Petersburg,) and one High School (in Petersburg.) The name PORTA was formed alphabetically from the leading letters for the names of local communities Petersburg, Oakford, Rock Creek, Tallula, and Atterberry.

Situated in Illinois’ state capital, the Robert Morris University Springfield location offers students plenty of historic, cultural and recreational activities. Located near the White Oaks Mall, the Springfield location is on a major bus route and close to the State Capitol. Like the other locations of Robert Morris University, the Springfield campus offers a diversity of programs and activities to enrich the college experience. Recently, the RMU Springfield location increased its athletic program with the addition of a hockey team, men’s and women’s basketball teams, and a women’s soccer team. Already the program has created additional opportunities for more students to participate in college athletics, either as players or student supporters.

UIS was established in 1969 as Sangamon State University by the Illinois General Assembly. On July 1, 1995, SSU became a campus of the University of Illinois, thereafter known as the University of Illinois at Springfield.
