Like all beginnings, a few people had a dream - not a definite plan, but an idea, inspired perhaps by the gentle rolling hills which has created an ideal reservoir for dammed up water. These people were able to visualize the task of creating a man-made lake for the benefit of not only today's residents of Petersburg and the surrounding community, but also of coming generations. Starting from the vague structures of a "dream", little by little local persons began to catch the enthusiasm, and on September 8, 1958, a committee was appointed by the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce to investigate the possibility of building a lake in the Petersburg area. Lake Petersburg
Association, a not for profit corporation, was formed during the week of
April 31, 1960. At this time the final site selection for Lake Petersburg
was announced Lake Petersburg was officially dedicated on Labor Day, September 3, 1963, with ceremonies held on the south of Willow Point. The finale was a fireworks display which ended a day when the entire community felt proud of the completion of beautiful Lake Petersburg.
