Hello. My maternal grandmother was Hazel Altig. My mother, Thelma, was born in 1915 in Petersburg. Her brother was Edison and her father was Oscar Haywood. Her maternal grandfather was David Altig and I believe he was a judge.
My paternal grandparents were Julius and Anna Geisness. Julius was the first superintendent of New Salem State Park and my father George lived with them at the park maybe in the 1920's.
I want to plan a trip to the area and would like to contact anyone who might have family information.
Thank you.

Hi, my name is Rick Smith, from California. I recently visited your website and thought you may be able to help me with finding family members. I have been looking for my father's family for many years now but with little to go on it has been tough. This is all the info I have on his parents and siblings. My father's name was Charles Edward Smith DOB 5/28/1914, he was raised in the Tallula, Il. area. Parents were William R. Smith 6/1/1878-1/19/1964 Stepmother Lertie J. Smith 3/8/1895-7/13/1981 whom are both buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Tallula Il.
We know his father worked in the coal mines and the children's mother's name was Nancy but she passed and Lertie raised the children. His sibling: Gertrude Smith DOB 1/8/1910, Walter, William H. (Bill), Mildred, Edward, Blanch whom we believe to be the baby of the family. Donald (died by being electrocuted by an electrical fence in approx. 1952). My father joined the Army in 1941 and never returned to the Illinois area. What we know of his sibling comes from letters dating back to the early 50's to 60's, and what we can remember being told of them growing up. Some of the letters have return addresses from Springfield, Il. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Rick Smith

Hello, my name is Brian Flesner, About a year or so ago I read an article in a surveying magazine about a surveying museum. I was wondering if it was in Petersburg? If so, is it still open, and with the museum opening in Springfield do you think it will help or hurt your business?
Thank You,

You have a sign on the corner of the courthouse stating, in part, that Abraham Lincoln had taught himself the occupation of surveying. If you search the book " Herndon's Informants " online, you will see that on page 10 is a letter from Mentor Graham. This letter was solicited from Mr. Herndon shortly after Lincoln's death from all those that knew him and who were still alive. In that letter it states from Mentor Graham that he helped Lincoln study the art of surveying, and taught him geometry, which is a part of surveying. So your sign wouldn't be totally accurate. Also, in the book are letters from Mentor Graham that Lincoln lived with Graham for a period of six months. In this time Graham also validates that Lincoln himself talked to Graham of his relationship with Ann Rutledge. The relationship is to believed to be " alleged ", but Graham himself verifies it.

I'm looking for information on my mothers aunt Elsa Powell who died in 2005 and who resided with her husband Ralph in Petersburg. Her husband who died while living in Petersburg is as far as we know also buried in Petersburg. Elsa then moved to Wisconsin but her wishes were to be buried together with her husband. Elsa was born in Sweden, where I'm writing from, and we have lost contact with other relatives. If anyone has information on where Elsa is buried please contact me.

Cathwren Hermon's new book is out, and Petersburg, IL and Edgar Lee Masters' home are featured in Chapter 3! Her book "The Road Goes Ever On" is an entertaining series of stories about her travels in all 50 states, along with Canada, Mexico and Central America.  Cathwren mentions more than 400 people by their first names whom she's met in her journeys.  The subtitle is "Are You in This Book?"  You just might be, or at least someone you know may be mentioned.  The book is available at the Publisher's website www.xlibris.com and also at all the major booksellers' sites: bn.com (Barnes and Noble), borders.com, and amazon.com among others.  Why not order your copy today and see if you are in the book?

I am trying to find out information about the old Satorius Funeral Home, the one located on the square above Napa, (before it moved up to the current Oaks B&B location) and the old Odd Fellows building (located in the building to the north of the old funeral home) and the building to the south of the old funeral home. All located on the 3rd floors, on the square. Also, if anyone has any knowledge of a "Margaret Agnes Klein", that information would be helpful to. I am moving back to central Illinois and am seriously thinking about buying a home in Petersburg.  I am a Springfield native.    I am drawn to Petersburg and consider it to be one of the more attractive towns in central Illinois. I also like the rural character of Menard County as well as the relatively clean environment. I wonder though what the local economy is like in Petersburg.  I subscribe to the Observer and see that the police department seems to have a hard time keeping officers.  Likewise, I am concerned about sprawl and wonder what locals think about the Arrowhead Pointe development to the east of town with its potential 100's of new houses.  Basically, if you would be so kind to let me know what it is like to live in Petersburg on a daily basis as well as your thoughts about the future of the town, I sure would appreciate it.  Thanks!

This is a truly wonderful website.  It has inspired me to visit Petersburg this summer in search of family roots.  I would very much enjoy hearing from anyone with suggestions on how to go about doing that and where I might stay for one or two nights.

My ancestors were Jacob Stein and Paulina Temperance Clark, who were married in 1849 in Menard County and they are buried at Rose Hill.   He was a German immigrant and a landowner and businessman (restaurant?) in Petersburg.  Her father was Henry Clark and her mother was Mary "Polly" Slinker.  They are also buried at Rose Hill.

Very little else is known.  I am not only interested in their lives and times, but the local history of Petersburg in the mid-to-late 1800's as well.

Are there any Stein, Clark, or Slinker families still in the area?

I am researching the Woldridge(Wooldridge)family in and around Petersburg and Menard County. I am particularly interested in David and Mary Elisabeth Woldridge who came to Petersburg in the early 1830's. They died between 1857 and 1860. They are supposedly buried in a Woldridge Cemetery that might have been bulldozed  years ago. I am interested in contacting any relatives of the Woldridge's still living in the area.

Never knew this site existed. Followed some Lincoln links.
Spent summers with my uncle (Howard Gramm) 1959-62 (?)
He had 2 homes in P-Burgh. One around the corner from the old Western Tire and that mansion known as "White Oaks".
"Unc" moved to FL. on retirement as manager of Illinois Bell. Last I heard he passed away a few years back.
My cousin Karen, was married at White Oaks to a Hudspeth.
I remember "Unc" as a practical joker. One morning, he took me down to the Sangamon for some fishing. We spotted large paw prints in the mud and he told me they were lion tracks.
We both chuckled over that one. Until the next day when in the paper, (may have been TV) we discovered some large cat had got loose from a circus or something.
Anyway, finding this site brought back a lot of lost memories of the best small town in IL.
I probably don't know anyone there, but HELLO from Chi-town nonetheless.

From 1946 to 1952 I lived in Petersburg with my family. My father was Louis Dunch my mother was Joan and my sister Gerry I'm Donna. I was just a baby then but remember with fond memories growing up in this wonderful town going to Tom Whelin's drugstore and Kirby's grocery store. We lived across the street from the Sewell family and the Dawson family. My father had a business manufacturing farm implements the business had some problems so we moved back to Cleveland, Ohio. I would love to revisit Petersburg the last time we returned was in 1984 and stayed at the Hill Top Motel is it still there?

As a child I attended Third Ward Elementary School, and also the First Baptist Church.  After graduating from Athens High in 1972, I joined the Navy and spent 26 years on active duty, retiring in Chesapeake, Virginia (City forms the western border of the City of Virginia Beach.)  After I retired, I got a job in City government.  One day, while talking with a couple of ladies on break, I discovered one of them was from Petersburg, IL, and still has family just north of town.  We know many of the same families, and her Dad knew my Dad by name.  My family all migrated to Springfield or to Virginia following military service.  One sister still lives just west of town off Route 97.
I enjoy visiting the Petersburg, Athens, and Menard County websites.  The ladies in my office got a good laugh when they saw the Athens City Hall building.  The Chesapeake City Hall is the largest, most elaborate building in the City.  Visit at www.cityofchesapeake.net.

I lived in Petersburg and graduated in 1960.  My husband Bud and I moved to Springfield after we married in 1961.  Abt. a year and half ago we moved to Kingsport, TN.
My question is that I found in my aunt's (from Petersburg) papers a little booklet that had Thomas L. Cantrall, Druggist, Athens, IL stamped on the back of it.  The booklet is "Plough's Black and White Birthday and Dream Book".  I found one booklet listed on the web and it showed dates between 1909-1922.  My question is does anyone know about these old booklets and does anyone remember the druggist Thomas L. Cantrall and where his building was?
On one of the pages in the booklet it shows, "Let lovely Estelle Clark, fascinating Metro Star" tell you about Black and White Lemon Beautifying Cream.  A jar cost 25 cents!!

Letter to the Editor
I would like to let the women of Menard County know of a valuable asset they have!!  In January, I signed up for a  12 week class, the cost was $10.00, not really knowing a lot about it. We got a digi walker included in that. I wanted to loose a little weight, but my cholesterol was a little high, so I needed to learn how to eat properly and how to exercise.  YOU DO NOT WEIGH IN!!  So you don't have to worry about someone knowing how much you weigh.  This class is for women of any age and any stage of weight gain or loss.
We were given information about how to exercise, and enjoy it. We learned how to be healthy.  You don't have to run a mile.  You don't have to work at anyone's pace except your own. Did you know you get just as much good out of three, ten minute walks as you do one, thirty minute walk? If you don't have time to exercise or if you don't like to exercise, they give you great hints on use your time at work, or  while taking care of the home, and family.   Each person sets her own goals. We learned how to make a plan,  the use of a journal, reduce barriers that stop us from exercising, or eating what is good for us instead of what is convenient. They show us how to make healthy food always convenient.  We were given information on eating properly.  Although we occasionally can eat those things we really enjoy.  We are taught that it is PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION  is what is in important!  I have trouble staying with a diet, you learn not to diet but to eat plenty just eat properly. We were given great recipes and we even shared our own.  Our last class we even had cake.
I met a some very very nice ladies through this class!!  Some of us continue to walk even though the class is over.  If you are new to Menard County and want to meet other women, or need to change your eating habits then I suggest this class.  Remember when you used to bike ride or play tennis or just go for a walk!!  Or just do things with your kids.  You will have more energy to keep up with them.
Lynn Espenschied, and Linda Kincaid always answered our health and exercise questions, and when they couldn't when we came back to class the next week they had all of the information we needed.  Each week we were given hand outs to update us or inform us on the topic of that session.
The only thing that I see about this program is you hear about children's being overweight. Maybe  families could learn about nutrition and exercise  through this class together.  The parents and students learning how to exercise and eat healthy.  They can keep each other in check.
Did you know you could walk out at PORTA HIGH SCHOOL  at certain times of the day.  So you don't have to walk outside if it is snowing, raining or to hot.  This is better than driving to White Oaks Mall!!  We have a great asset in our own community.  Lynn and Linda did a great job!!  It was fun and informative.
THANK YOU, LYNN and LINDA

As a present council member of the City of Petersburg for over 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work with two of the candidates running for Mayor of Petersburg, and I whole-heartedly endorse the Incumbent: Diane Kube. There is no better place to come home to than right here, amidst the woodland hills along the river.  When I moved here from Chicago in 1988, a local resident told me, "If you can't find it in Petersburg, you don't really need it".  I laughed and thought this would be something I would have to learn to live with. I have since come to realize this goes along with, "We travel the world over, in search of happiness and then come home to find it".  I too, love to travel and my fondest part of the journey is re-entering Menard County to smell the sweetness of the country air.  Thank You Petersburg, for being the place I call home.

Hello, I am searching for a website to reach theHurley Funeral Homes 122 West Douglas Ave. Petersburg, Ill. 62675. I have been researching my Smith family relatives from Illinois for many years now and was recently sent pics of my grandma/pa's headstone in Greenwood West Cemetery in Tallula. I was told that the Hurley did most of the mortuary care back in the 60's - 80's. You may reach me at rick_smith1961@yahoo.com or by land mail at 19808 Aubrey Road Dos Palos, Ca. 93620. I am looking for any relatives to William R. Smith 6/1/1878 to 1/19/1964 married to Lertie J. Smith 3/8/1895 to 7/13/1981. This was my grandfather and step grandmother, I do not have much info on my father's siblings and could use any help I can get to find them or their children. Thank You in advance for any help you can provide me with. rick_smith1961@yahoo.com

3rd Annual Petersburg Community-Wide Block Party! We are so excited as we begin our plans for our 3rd Annual Community Wide Block Party. We can only take credit for the success of the last two years because of your support and encouragement. When we started two years ago, we were hoping for an event where all members of the community could come together and celebrate being a part of the Petersburg/Porta Community. We have always prided ourselves on the fact that this is a totally free event. This year our Block Party will be held on May 14 from 5 – 8 p.m. on the Dairy Queen parking lot. There will be a menu of Hot Dogs, Baked Beans, Potato Chips and Drinks. We will also have sno-cones, popcorn and cotton candy. There will be rides and games for the kids, including the inflatable bounce house, basketball throw, dunk tank and more. There will be special games for the smaller children. A craft table and pre-registration for Vacation Bible School will also be available along with live entertainment including several performances by the Discipling Puppets. All those who come are also put in drawings that will be randomly given away throughout the night. As I stated earlier, we could not have had the great successes in the past without your help. Therefore we are asking your help once again, if you could contribute prizes for the drawings, contributions for the food or even monetary donations to help out, we would be honored. We also hope that you would allow us to put up signs promoting this event at your business location. All donations are tax deductible and you will be given a receipt for tax purposes, also you will be acknowledged on the “supporters of the community-wide block party” advertising board. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 632-7925 or you can contact First Baptist Church at 632-2488 or email me at beecal@aol.com. Thank you in advance for all your help. Hello: I'm researching my family lineage which has roots in various areas of Illinois (my parents are from Springfield though). My paternal grandfather was born in Fancy Prairie (Ivey Jackson Key) and my grandmother was born in Petersburg(Margaret Foster Cordery). My maternal grandfather (Guy Nelson Adkinson)was born in Henry and grandmother (Ethel Matilda Brown) was born in Streator. What I'm checking on now is for information on my paternal great grandfather, Thomas Key. He was born in Virgina, married (Louvina Coffey)in Petersburg, and he died in Croft Station, IL in 1898. I ordered a book entitiled "Menard County Church History" and saw only the name, Thomas Key, listed as being an elder or preacher who had served at the Tallula Christian Church. So, I'm trying to find someone who may know how I can verify if this was my great grandfather and get more information about him. Thank you.

It is nice to know that as far away from home, as I am , I can still, see pictures of where i grew up. I am looking for people who know the connection of the Eilers and the Ritterbushs. Anyone who might have information about them. They had a farm west of town about 8 miles. My grandparents had a three story white house a brock from Douglas next door to the Turners, and close to the Dirks with three porches on it. Within the last few years someone build a red brick house in the center of the circle drive of the house. I spend many sundays' there with my family. I worked in Petersburg two summers at the Great American People Show near 1990-1991. I regard Petersburg as one of my most happy memories. There is a charm and a sense of history that, accompanied by an overwhelming hospitality - stands out fresh in my mind. I enjoyed George Warburtons, Margaret Ford's cookies and many afternoons on the Kline's dock. Petersburg, Illinois - still special to me.

My grandfather, Earle L Hodgen, sang tenor in a barbershop quartet with Judge Virgil Whipp, Dr Isaac Fouche and Arthur Johnson in the 1930s. They performed at many events and at minstral shows at the Harris Opera House. I would like to hear from anyone with information about their quartet and performances. Hi! I'm Andrew. I live in St.Petersburg, Russia. I wanna know some facts about the cities over the world bearing the same names. I've tryed to do my best while sesrching general information about Your Petersburg. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it, cause your site don't possess the later. I mean some facts about the history of foundation, quick facts about its population, employment, industry etc. So, its a pity.

I just out I'm related to the Clary that Clary's Grove was named for. I can't find Clary's Grove on any map but understand it was near Petersburg. Apparently I'm also related by marriage to the Jack Armstrong that Abe Lincoln whupped way back when. I'd appreciate any information concerning when that Clary moved on and where he moved on to. Any info on Clary family members would be appreciated, too.
