Ag Discovery Day Held for 5th grades in Menard County

The first annual Ag Discovery Day for all the 5th grade students in Menard County was held on Wednesday, September 20 at the Menard County Fairgrounds.

The event was sponsored by the Menard County Soil & Water Conservation District, Menard County Farm Bureau, University of Illinois Extension-Sangamon-Menard Unit, and the Sangamon-Menard Ag Education Partnership.

During the event, the 225 students rotated between eight different learning stations. Speakers and topics were: Duane Friend, U of I Extension, streamtable; Carolyn Gerberding and helper Daniel, bees; Charlie Starling, old time ag; Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant, U of I Extension, sustainable ag; Barb Lieberoff, IEPA, putting for conservation; Mary Kirby and others, farm safety; Jeff Broughton, Stevens Implement, lawnmower safety; and Matt Montgomery, U of I Extension, worms.

To wrap up the event, a trivia tournament was held to see how much everyone learned. Each classroom worked together as a team to answer trivia questions from each of the learning stations. The classroom with the most correct answers from their school won a White Oak tree, the state tree of Illinois, to plant at their school. Winning classrooms were: Mrs. Throckmorton’s from PORTA Central, Mrs. Alderman from Greenview and Mrs. Glenn from Cantrall Intermediate.
